The BodyBoss Home Gym 2.0 was created with portability in mind. The most popular reason people give for not working out is a lack of time. With work and family responsibilities, many people (including myself) don't always have time to go to the gym.

Knowing this, the creators of the BodyBoss devised a home workout that you can take with you everywhere you go—rather than going to the gym, the gym comes to you.

In theory, this is fantastic. There is clearly a market for this sort of portable fitness equipment. But BodyBoss isn't the only company that has considered this. It turns out that there is an entire industry dedicated to satisfying the need for portable fitness equipment.


Home Gym BodyBoss 2.o

The BodyBoss 2.0 is a resistance band-based fitness device designed to accompany you on the drive, whether for business or fun. The concept, although basic, is very clever. A base, resistance bands, and a series of attachments are used to pull off the entire device.

I'd like to begin with my favorite feature, the foundation.


DESIGNED TO BE SAFE & DURABLE:



The Foundation

The BodyBoss foundation is what distinguishes this home gym system from the various resistance band sets on the market today. The base enables you to bind the bands to the floor in various configurations to execute the various exercises.

The biggest disadvantage to using any resistance band, in my opinion, is having to step on it for movements like bicep curls and shoulder presses. I normally exercise barefoot, but stepping on the band digs into the bottom of my foot is extremely painful. And with my shoes on, I feel a little uncomfortable.

BodyBoss's approach is to have a platform that helps you to attach the bands to the floor rather than stepping on them. This not only makes the workouts more enjoyable, but it also gives you more workout variety and resistance control.

The base has 5 fold-up hooks on each side for connecting the resistance bands. You may experiment with resistance by adding a band to one hook and snaking it through another, effectively shortening the band. 

This gives the user a bit more control over resistance changes, which can often be enough of a difference to make adding another band or updating a band unnecessary.

When lying flat on the surface, the dimensions of the foundation are as follows: 19.75 “(L) x 34′′(W) x 1′′ (H). This is large enough for most people to comfortably stand on for squats.

The base folds in half and can be held like a suitcase to keep the machine compact (which is the primary goal).

The non-slip grip prevents the base from slipping on you when in operation. It also has some padding for extra support during workouts.

The resistance bands

The bands included with the BodyBoss are fairly common. There isn't anything to say about them that is especially noteworthy, but I did want to highlight a few points.

Each of the given bands provides up to 30 lb of resistance. I claim "up to" because resistance bands vary in resistance depending on how far they are spread (basically the farther they have stretched the more resistance you get). 

All bands are like this, but the amount of resistance varies depending on how thick they are and how easily they can be extended.

These bands have clips on both ends that allow you to attach them to the base, handles, and all attachments. They're also wrapped in a cloth material, which I believe is meant to keep the band from wearing down.

The offered bands are adequate, but only two are included with the home gym kit. That's just one band per side for exercises like squats. You can add more bands to the bar (and according to BodyBoss, you can fit about 4-5 bands on either side of the bar), but you'll have to buy them separately or use ones you already have.

This is fine because every band can work with the BodyBoss 2.0 as long as it has clip attachments. However, it would be cool if BodyBoss included a few more bands. It would also be good to have bands with different resistance levels for a little more resistance control.

The included bands are approximately 30 inches long, and some users said that they wished they were a little longer. Taller people can feel a little constrained during certain exercises. The BodyBoss gym allows you to make the bands a little shorter, but not much longer.

The Add ons with the bodyboss 2.0

The BodyBoss 2.0 comes with a variety of attachments for performing different exercises. The home gym kit includes the following attachments:

  • Workout bar
  • 2 padded handles 
  • 2 padded wrist/ankle braces
  • Door cleat

 


Although I believe BodyBoss scrimped a little by only including two bands, I believe they did a decent job with the included attachments. They have everything you need to get started with your portable home gym. I like that the door anchor is included because it eliminates the need to use the foundation for any exercise.


BodyBoss comes with an exercise manual to get you started, and they have hundreds of fitness videos online.

The BodyBoss's overall fitness range is very remarkable. Except for Total Gyms and some Bowflex models, it provides more fitness variety than most regular home gyms (neither of which is portable by the way).


Squats are made easier with the aid of the exercise pole. It also has padded grips, so you can treat it like a barbell and use it for any workout you can do with a barbell.

The section of the bar where the bands clip-on rotates, allowing the band to still be oriented in the correct place when you walk- this ensures that the bands don't get all kinked up on you when you're working out.


It also splits into two sections for fast transportation.

The straps and handles are fairly common. The wrist/ankle straps allow you to do a variety of exercises that you would not be able to do otherwise.

It's awesome that all of these attachments are included, but how do you transport all of this stuff? This is meant to be a mobile home gym. To address this, BodyBoss requires a carrying case that houses all of the attachments.

I think it would be cool if the accessories could fit within the base when folded, making everything self-contained and eliminating the need for an external storage bag.


The Workouts

In terms of workouts, BodyBoss says that their home gym system allows you to perform over 300 different movements.

I'm not sure I can think of too many exercises (maybe if you count unilateral movements on each hand as a separate movement, as some home gyms do), but pretty much any exercise you can think of can probably be done on the BodyBoss 2.0.

While users say that performing an effective deadlift on this device is difficult, this is likely due to the difficulty in getting the band short enough to provide resistance early enough in the movement.

Bench the press does not fit well with this device either

However, with the given base and door anchor, you can perform all of the regular exercises, such as squats, chest flys, bicep curls, tricep extensions, shoulder flys, and lat pulldowns.

You may also select whether to use the bar or individual handles for your movements, similar to how you would choose between dumbbells and a barbell.

Guarantee

According to the BodyBoss website, their gym comes with a lifetime warranty. That sounded much too good to be true for a product in this price range, so I looked into it further. It turns out that they have a one-year warranty for everything in the home workout kit.
This is far more plausible that the resistance bands will ultimately fail. Every band does. The repetitive stretching stresses the band, and over time it loses its ability to withstand it.
A one-year warranty on a product like this is fairly standard; some are better than others.

Last Thoughts:
The BodyBoss 2.0 Home Gym is a portable resistance band Exercise Equipment that allows you to get a great workout no matter where you are.

The BodyBoss ranks highly in terms of workout variety. You can pretty much do any exercise you can think of with all of the provided attachments and the foundation (with some adjustments).

Users accept that the materials are of high quality, and everything seems to function properly. The only disadvantage, in my view, is that it only comes with two resistance bands.

This would most likely not be enough resistance for most people, so you will need to buy more bands or use ones you already have.

The BodyBoss isn't poor in terms of portability. You can certainly throw this in the back of your car and go, but it would have been better if the adapters didn't need an extra bag to hold them in.

This machine can also be a little cumbersome to fly with (the base and attachments together weight about 15 lb).

Overall, I enjoy using BodyBoss 2.0. The foundation is well-designed and will make working out with bands much more enjoyable. I also believe it is reasonably priced for what you get.
Although this system is intended to be portable, I believe it would also function well as a stand-alone home gym system, especially if space is limited.
